Monday 17th February 2020 is national random act of kindness day, but should we really need to be reminded to be kind?
We hear so often that we need to stand up for ourselves, to be heard and be seen, however none of this should be done at the expense of others. We all have thoughts and opinions but we need to remember that we all have feelings too. And what may just be a throw away comment for you could deeply hurt another.
We live in a world where ‘everything’ is out there for everyone to see and comment on, but what we can’t see is what is going on inside someone.
So what does kindness mean – the dictionary definition is – the quality of being friendly, generous and considerate, kindness is doing something and not expecting anything in return. It is the act of helping others without expecting help back.
Did you know that kindness can have a positive impact on your health, when you are kind to others the brain releases the feel good chemicals, serotonin and oxytocin which are known to have a positive impact on stress levels, heart health and anxiety.
Kindness is sometimes seen as a weakness, it is not it is one of the greatest forces for good in the world, it is a language that all people recognise. It has no barriers across cultures, it is the universal language of one person to another. Kindness is the language of the heart that creates a connection between two people.
Let’s not forget how important it is too to be kind to ourselves, it is all too easy to be unkind in the words we choose for our inner dialogue, berating ourselves for not being good enough, smart enough, thin enough…… We are often so full of regrets from the past or worries for the future that we find it hard to take a moment to be kind to ourselves.
Kindness is a gift everyone can afford and is never wasted. Bringing warmth and value to somebody with no expectation in return. When you are kind to others, it not only changes you, but also has the power to change the world.
So remember……
In a world where you can be anything, be kind
